I am trying to restore to an earlier time but my system restore only displays today's date. It does not display previous months in the calendar. How can i retrieve early restore points????

On the left side of the Restore program, change the System Restore Settings to 12% to give it more space and create more restore points. Points can be saved back to 90 days only if you give it enough space. Your PC does not have the space, thus it deletes all previous restore points when you shutdown for the current point. Manually create a restore point, give it a name, and it will store for 90 days.

Is there anyway to disable System Restore temporarily? If so, how?

Yes. Right click on My Computer and select Properties. Go to the System
Restore tab and you can turn off System Restore there. You can turn it
back on again at the same place when you want it. Note that turning off
SR will remove all existing restore points, a new one will be created when
you turn it back on.
