My system:Windows XP home P4 1.8 GHz 256 MB ram Hard disk 40GB.
When using System Restore I find 18 restore points in May 2004 but I cannot
restore to any dates of the points. A message says 'Your computer cannot be
restored to
system checkpoint.'

How do you delete the restore points? When I use Disk Defragmenter I find
many files
that cannot be defragmented. They are all \System Volume
Information\_restore(followed
by some figures and letters).

How do stop creating restore points because my hard disk space is getting
lesser.

Thanks in advance.

System Restore uses the space allocated by you.
Once that space is full older Restore Points are automatically deleted
to make room for the new.
Do not worry about defragging System Volume Information since it is
not an issue.
If you want to delete Restore Points, go to Other Options in Disk
Clean-up.
The 3rd option deletes all but the latest Restore Point.
But, more will be back to fill the space you have allocated.
To change, open System Restore.
Click "System Restore Settings" on the left side.
Adjust slider as desired.

Thanks. Your advice to delete Restore Points using Disk Clean-up
works and I find the System Restore Settings slider in Control Panel,
System, System Properties, System Restore, where you can turn off System
Restore and set the slider lower. Now my free disk space is back to normal.
