Why does my system restore only show the current date as
a possible restore point? No past dates. Thanks

Restore points are in Bold (not highlighted) like the current date. You can select dates up to 90 days in arrears. Suggest you CREATE a manual restore point, which is good for 90 days. Also on the left-hand side in settings, set the system restore size to 12% for more restore points.

Many possible reasons.
--Disk Cleanup has an option to remove all but the most current restore
point.
--Making a system change that makes a large enough difference that past
restore points are not useful. For example: repairing Windows or changing
partition layouts will do this.
--Toggling System Restore off and then on again.
--Making a change in the amount of space reserved for restore points.
--Probably could reset this feature by disabling and enabling services in
the right (or wrong!) sequence.
--Software glitches: Haven't seen too many of these with XP but things like
MacAfee and Norton have had a history of botching up restore points in the
past.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Remember that System Restore was designed as a repair tool for "short term"
damage. It's value should not be confused with that of routinely creating a
full system backup or image.
