My system restore doesn't work. When I try to access it,
I get an error from Microsoft saying program must close
and asking if I want to send a report to Microsoft.

Hi Debbie,

Once System Restore is broken, usually the only way to fix it is to stop the
service, reboot, and restart it. Unfortunately, this has the side effect of
losing all existing restore points, so you will be starting fresh (but at
least it will be working now). To do this, start/run services.msc, locate
the SR service and double-click it. "Stop" the service, set the startup type
to disabled. Click apply/ok and reboot. Reverse the steps to restart it.

What, by the way, were you hoping to fix using System Restore?

Thanks so much - you guys are awesome! System Restore is
functioning again! I wasn't trying to restore, but to
turn it off, as suggested by support for some software I
was trying to run. Wish you could help me with
that . . .

Hi,

Glad to help. What is the problem with the software you are trying to
install?

Hi! I purchased Broderbund Home Architect 5.1 on-line,
downloaded it, successfully installed it, but can't use
it. When opening it, I get a "MBuilder" warning that the
program requires 32000 colors. When I attempt to begin a
new project, I get "MBuilder" "Microsoft encountered a
problem and needs to close. Please let Microsoft know
about this . . . " and the program closes. I meet all
system requirements. I've tried everything suggested!
Any ideas?

Hi Debbie,

What is your video set for? Check display properties/settings tab.

800x600 32 bit
I found that the display settings within the program
itself were set wrong, so I'm not getting the warning
about 32000 colors now. I still get the mbuilder error
after opening the program and selecting a new project.

Hi Debbie,

Assuming (from the gist of your prior messages) that you have already
contacted their support, what were their recommendations? Why would they
want you to disable System Restore?

Aside from checking system requirements and display
settings, they had me update video driver, turn off
hardware acceleration, remove program, download new
program, and reinstall. I also ran through some steps on
the Broderbund web site as they suggested, and that's
where I read something about turning sys restore off. If
I remember correctly, it had something to do with XP and
some programs, not specifically Home Architect. I'm
about to give up!!!

Hi Debbie,

This is what I would try: Uninstall the program, then reinstall it while in
compatibility mode for another supported operating system (all
programs/accessories/program compatibility wizard). Check with Broderbund as
to which other OS's are supported.

Before reinstalling, make sure to disable antivirus software and empty any
\temp folders.

Hi Rick,
I tried the Compatibility Wizard for Windows98, one of
the other OS for my software. Still no go. Do I need to
try for the other supported OS? I can't tell you how
much I appreciate you sticking with me on this.

Hi Debbie,

Is the error message still the same?

If so, then something about the program does not like your display adapter
or the settings it supports. There may not be much more you can do if
Broderbund cannot resolve it.

Rick,
Oh well, I guess I picked the wrong video card! I got
such a great deal on it, I couldn't refuse. Maybe I'm
just not meant to do my own architect work. Anyway,
you've been great to try to help me out. The people on
this board have helped me many times - it's such an
asset! Thanks again!
Debbie

I cannot restore System restore either. Each time I try to open SR I get the
following message:

"rstrui.exe Entry Point not found

The procedure entry point RemoteAssistancePrepareSystemRestore could not be
located in the dynamic link library WINSTA.dll"

I've tried stopping SR, and restarting. Also I have run sfc /scannow,
neither of which helps. also I've noticed that SR has gone from the System
properties window.

Help please!,

David
