it's a hewlet packard media center desktop pc m1090n is the model number &
running xp media center. It's probably about 3 yrs old now. It's actually
working fine but I'm giving it to my mother because her computer was about
10yrs old and just not working right due to her having a lot of virus's and
such in it.

The answer to your question is Standard Recovery on page 11 of the
Manual in the link attached.
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00188927.pdf

Given that your mother is hardly likely to forensically examine your
hard drive and you might wish to avoid downloading again every Windows
update since your computer was new I would try a different approach.
Create a new User Account with a blank password for your mother and
remove your own User Account, after backing anything you need for your
new computer. Uninstall any programmes you think your mother will not
want through Start, Control Panel, Add / Remove Programs. Turn System
Restore monitoring Off and then back On. Finally carry out carry out
routine housekeeping,

I would make changes to User Profile by logging on in Safe Mode as
Administrator.

To delete a user profile

You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the
Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your
computer is connected to a network, network policy settings might also
prevent you from completing this procedure.
Open System in Control Panel.
On the Advanced tab, under User Profiles, click Settings.
Under Profiles stored on this computer, click the user profile you want
to delete, and then click Delete.
Note
To open System, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click
System.

How to create and configure user accounts in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/279783

You will need to make change to the internet connection details removing
yours and entering your mother's details.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Run Disk
Defragmenter.

One thing you may think about is whether to change Owner
http://www.theeldergeek.com/modify_registered_owner_and_organization.htm

The reason I say think is that involves changing the Registry and I
hesitate before suggesting Registry changes.

There may be some things I have missed so watch for other posts.
