Click Start / Help, then look for help on Safe Mode to see how
it's done.

i followed the instructions in performance and
maintenance to enter safe mode .
it tells me to : " go to start , shut down and click
restart and click ok " . there is no ok .
when you see the message : " please select operating
system to start , press f 8 "
there is no such message .
i don't have a clue .
xp pro
sp 2
i.e. 7
o.e. 6
thanks ,

Your eyes and your memory are tricking you. When
you shut down the PC, there was an OK button to
proceed with the shut-down, even though you appear
to have missed it. And in the start-up process you've
got the order wrong. I recommend you print out the
instructions below, then follow them VERBATIM:
1. Shut down your computer.
2. Wait until the screen has gone blank.
3. Turn on your computer.
4. Keep tapping functon key F8.
5. When a menu appears on a black screen, stop
tapping F8.
6. Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to select Safe Mode.
7. Press the Enter key on your keyboard.

You will now get into the Safe Mode of Windows. See if
System Restore works there.

thanks for your patience .
it did a system restore in safe mode .
do you have ant idea why it does
not work in normal mode ?

Are you sure. This is how I would do it:

Start | Turn Off Computer | Turn Off (other choices: Stand By and
Restart)

I don't get an OK button, either when I click on a choice. Perhaps there
is a difference between Home and Pro? Or some sort of Fischer Price
theme?

Sometimes programs like Norton interfere. In safe mode, there are no
such programs running, so there is no such interference.

There probably are a number of reasons why SR won't work in normal mode,
but some antivirus applications (certainly Norton and perhaps Kaspersky)
may cause this effect.

For all the information you want to know about System Restore, see
