System restore

It appears that the "system restore" item on the (F8) boot menu is not yet
available. (Not to be confused with "last good" or selective file restoration.)
Writing the iso file was successful, but I see no way to restore it.

Can someone confirm.

Have you made any system restore points yet? When you start SR are there
any points?

No, this isn't THAT system restore, but an image that is made of every file,
every setting - similar to "Ghost" and the Acronis imaging product.
This appears to be a new, yet long overdue feature...

The HELP item for using it refers to a specific item on the F8 menu that
leads to restoration. That item is not seen here, using BETA2.

The F8 system restore is the same as the system restore reached from within
Windows itself. It is not for restoring from a ghost image. I am a little
uncertain what you mean by "I see no way to restore it (.iso file)." The
system restore at F8 is for doing a regular system restore when Vista
refuses to load. It is a new recovery option.

I understand that what you are looking for is a full backup/restore image.
System restore will never make such an image. CompletePC Backup, which uses
volsnap.sys (as does SR), is much closer to what you were hoping for. It
generates block level copies in the .vhd format. Whether it can run a
restore from the recovery tools or the system has to be running is beyond my
knowledge. I suspect that the design is for it to be useful from WinRE
reached by booting the dvd.

Yes, CompletePC Backup is the name MS has given this feature. It's an
image.
The HELP file on restoring the image reads as follows...

"A system image backup contains copies of your programs, system
settings, and files. You can use a system backup to restore the contents
of your computer if your hard disk or entire computer ever fails.

Warning
When you restore your computer from a system image backup, it is a
complete restoration. You can't choose individual items to restore, and
all of your current programs, system settings, and files are replaced.

Before starting, make sure that the removable media on which your backup
is stored is available, if applicable.

Insert the system image backup DVD into a DVD drive on your computer, or
if the backup is on an external drive, connect the external drive to
your computer.

Turn on the computer and press F8 while the computer is starting up.

This will open the Windows Recovery Environment.

Click Windows System Image Backup, and then follow the instructions."

....and there's the rub. No "Windows System Image Backup" item can be
seen on the F8 menu here.

Are you saying you made a Windows System Image Backup but it is not
available at F8 or just that the .iso used to install Vista is not such an
image but should be? If the latter, by all means make the suggestion to MS
using either the bug reporter at
http://windowsbeta.microsoft.com/vista/bugs.aspx?&build=0&sku=0
or the "sentiments" site at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/sentiments/default.mspx

Yup, that's pretty much it. This has nothing to do with the Vista install ISO.
In this case, the image was created (lotso files), but there appears to be
no way to restore it...

Unless they mean that those files, copied to removable media, have made that
media bootable, and will present the appropriate menu choice when fired up.
That's not what I read in the HELP file, though they do instruct to connect
the drive with the ISO file - or to put in the CD/DVD prior to F8.

I am certain that more info will come to light as development proceeds.
This CompletePC tool seems somewhat limited when contrasted with other
imagers, as individual files cannot be restored; that's apparently the job
of the "back up utility."

Thanks for your insights.

Had not seen it, but the article clears the confusion. The XP disk _is_
needed to access the feature. Thanks.

You meant the Vista dvd, right? I think so.

Uhh, right. And I gather that the recovery environment can be loaded onto
the hard disk - but that's not the case here.
