I would like to restore my PC to an earlier date. Will I lose the recently
saved music (music/songs saved after the restore point I am going backtoo) on
the hard drive?

No. Your data files aren't monitored by System Restore.

Why do you want to do this and how far back are you planning to go? If you
try to use System Restore to go back
several weeks or months ago, you will almost certainly create all kind of
out-of-synch conditions, and make the situation *worse*, not better. That's
not System Restore's purpose and you should not think of it in those terms.
A week or two is about the longest time you can effectively go back.

For that reason, the default 12% of the drive that Windows uses for SR is
way too much for almost everyone, and should be lowered to give you at most
two weeks.

As long as they're not stored on your Desktop, they should be
OK.

If these files are important to you, why don't you have them
backed up to removable media such as a CD or DVD? Backing up
your files is something that should be done on a regular basis
but it becomes even more important when you're about to make
major changes to your operating system.

Good luck

I have a problem when I boot my PC (which I do infrequently) I get an error
after it boots up regarding REMIND.EXE. It akss me if I also want to send an
error report to Microsoft. It is not a big problem, at least I do not this it
is. It started on 12/26 after my son installed an then uninstalled some
software.

No - System Restore only restores system files - as the name suggests:
*System* Restore. (meaning the operating system itself). However, if you're
concerned, make your own backups of data files by what ever means you
usually do it.

If you are planning on using System Restore to go back to 12/25, that's over
five weeks ago. As far as I'm concerned, that's much too far back, and not
not a wise thing to do As I said below, going back that far makes you likely
to create out-of-synch conditions, and make the situation *worse*, not
better.

Instead, you should describe your problem in detail here, including the
exact verbatim text of the error message, and information about exactly what
software your son installed and uninstalled (and how he uninstalled it).
It's likely that someone here can help you solve it.

<nodding in agreement>

I've also seen files stored on the desktop change when using System
Restore.

Sounds suspiciously like one of those annoying sofware registration
reminders. You could run a search on your computer for the file and find out
which software it is associated with. Then uninstall-reinstall the software,
or disable the reminder if that is an option. As an alternative workaround
you could install a startup programs monitor, like CodeStuff's Starter, and
just disable Remind.exe from running at boot.
