Hi:

I have found that when an entry is deleted from the registry normally from that point on the Restore Points will no longer work. When this is the case I clean up everything and be sure that my system is working fine and turn off System Restore, which deletes all entries and free up HD space.

I then Defrag and afterwards turn System Restore back on which creates another initial restore point that will be valid. To turn System Restore off and on right click on My Computer and go to the System Restore Tab.

When system restore is broke I have never found fix or an answer. Tom
explained the only fix, but you will loose all restore points.

Dependant upon the space allocated for System Restore points, as new ones
are created, the oldest will be dumped..

Go to Control Panel - System, click on System Restore tab, and then on the
settings button to see and set the space allocation..

Please note that if there is not enough general free space on the drive, old
System Restore points will be dumped sooner..

Over and above the answers you've already gotten, you should realize that
System Restore is a tool that can be very useful for reverting the operating
system to the condition it was in yesterday, or at most a few days ago. Its
purpose is to let you undo an installation or choice you made *recently*.

It is *not* meant to be a complete backup solution. If you try to use it to
go back several weeks or months ago, you will almost certainly create all
kind of out-of-synch conditions, and make the situation *worse*, not better.
That's not System Restore's purpose and you should not think of it in those
terms. A week or two is about the longest time you can effectively go back.

So going back to the beginning of October is probably already too way far
back to be useful.

Well as days pass by windows deletes old points and keeps alive only new
ones even i have faced this prob long back.. You can resolve it by increasing
space alloted for restore..

Regarding the unable to complete try out Tom's responseelse I guess points
are curropted..

Does anyone know how to backup restore points only CD or other storage
media.. it will be very handy in these cases..

By default System Restore hold restore points for 90 days. Restore point size
and the amount of disk space set to hold restore points can affect how long
restore points held. As Ken points out, using restore points older than a few
days or a week can cause more problem then they solve.

Here are some tips on adjusting disk space usage and keeping System Restore
healthy:

also when i try to restore it to a check point it goes throw all the actions
but when it reboots my pc it says it was unable to restore it to that point

The majority of the time this is caused by a corrupt restore point. Turning
System Restore off then on again will purges all existing restore points, and
creates one new one.

Try running System Restore from Safe Mode.
Restart your computer, and then press F8 during the initial startup to start
your computer in Safe Mode.

Log on to your computer with an administrator account or with an account that
has administrator credentials.
In Safe Mode type or paste the following command in the Start - Run box then
press Enter.

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

There are also other possibilities that can cause this to happen. The following

Hi Bert:

I have NSW2006 on a laptop and Symantec must have fixed this problem. I established a Restore Point without turning anything off and it restored everything without any problems.
