When restoring to earlier date system restoes info but
when system reboots a message apears saying that there is
a incorect start up file so system restore does not work

Restore is not reliable. It's a marketing gimmick for MS.
You can turn it off from Control Panel > System > and then
re-boot and it will purge it's file. Then re-boot, turn it
back on.
You still have to deal the problem, it's a crap program,
that half works half the time.

Do a real backup and get Erunt for your registry. It puts
a folder on your root dir with a installer.

Please stop posting this message. ERunt is **not** a replacement for SR. SR is **not** a backup system for XP, ERunt is **not** a backup system for XP. ERunt is a backup program for the Registry. So what are you trying to say?

No matter how many times you repeat this, it's still nonsense.
System Restore is certainly not a substitute for a backup. But it
is far more than "just a marketing Gimmick for MS." It is a very
useful feature, one that has gotten me and many others out of
trouble many times.
