System Restore has ceased to function (operator error, I'm sure). Disk is
clean (55% free). If I ask to see the previous restore point, I'm told there
isn't one. Nor can I create a restore point. Recommendations?

turn system restore off...
then reboot

now turn it back on and see what happens

Lest anyone believe such a statement, let me point out that it's complete
and utter nonsense.

There's a chance your computer might still crash after performing a restore
but using System Restore will not be the reason for the crash. Since System
Restore can fix many (but not all problems), it's definitely worth a try
before turning to more drastic repair methods.
