I have just experienced the problem of a hard drive
failure. Being wise after the event I am now trying
various products "guaranteed" to back up my system. I
have met problems with all of them. I have just thought
of one useful option if I could get it to work. Is it at
all possible to back up the Windows XP System Restore
file to a CD ROM, so that I could restore my system to a
new hard drive? If so, How?
Tom

I don't think you can back up System Restore points as such, but you can
back up your registry, a more robust alternative. Go to the Windows backup
utility and issue the export keys command. If you have XP Home, you will
have to unearth your backup utility, which Microsoft has negligently
hidden from you. It is on your Windows disk in the ValueAdd folder.

What you could do is to run the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard in
XP (Accessories - System Tools) and save the resulting file to a CD.

Then in the event of a crash you can reinstall XP and run FASTW to
import the saved data and settings. Application programs would also
have to be reinstalled.

Also you could check out the products from TeraByte Unlimited at
http://www.bootitng.com Either the full BootItNG product or Image
For Windows will allow you to save a complete partition or selected
files directly to a CD burner.

Good luck
