Help!!

Hi everybody,

I just started a new post so that it would be easier to
find.

My question was, how do you do a system restore on a
Microsoft 2000 P.C.?

Thank you

Not possible on a Windows 2000 machine - System Restore was developed on
Windows ME and then included with Windows XP.

I just noticed this is probably the Cannot Go Online - help!!!!!!! person
from 2/28.

.
Yes, I am the cannot go online person.
Thank you for all your replies. I am still trying to solve
my problem. But the problem is that some of you gave me
links that contained automatic tools, but I would have to
go online to use them. So, I have to wait till I get to a
computer that has the internet and find a way to store the
executable on a floppy or something etc.

I noticed that some of you suggested I reboot the computer
in safe mode. How would that help me?

For those of you who do not know who I am : My problem is
I cannot go online because some files that I need are
deleted. and I am trying to restore the deleted files,
rather than reinstall or reconnect the TCP/IP files etc.

I think this is your only option to solve this.

Maybe a friend who knows about PC´s ?

Repair option for Microsoft Windows 2000.

* Follow the following steps.

1) Make sure CD-Rom is first Boot Device in
your Bios

2) Insert your Windows 2000 CD

3) Once this is done boot up using CD-Rom
Drive. ( When "Hit any Key to Boot From CD-Rom" appears on
screen, hit any key on keyboard to invoke CD-Rom boot)

* The "Repair Options" screen will eventually appear
after Windows 2000 has loaded in device drivers. Press "R"
to begin repair process.
* Soon you will see another "Repair" menu. Select "F"
to perform all repair options.
* Now the "Emergency Repair Disk" menu will appear. If
you have created the Emergency Repair Disks hit enter else
press "L"
* Windows 2000 will now search for installs on your system
* The "Windows Installs" menu will appear. If you only
have one install then press "ENTER" on your keyboard to
continue. Or if there's more than one select the
installation you wish to repair and then hit "ENTER"
*

Windows 2000 will now repair your system either from
the Emergency Repair Disks (ERD) or from the CD, once done
your system will reboot and hopefully everything will be
working fine

You are mistaken about what is needed to fix the problem, I believe.

I have yet to see a need to restore files in this situation. Even doing a
repair install may not fix the issue. Repairing the winsock LSP chain using
the KB article (which you can print out and take to the machine on paper)
will work.

You will need to print both the first KB article that I link to below, and
the other article that it references--because for Windows 2000, the fix is
in that second article. As I recall, you felt that this fix was more
complicated than you felt able to manage.

Here's my new suggestion: Please call 1-866-pcsafety. This is a Microsoft
PSS support phone number for free help with virus related or security-patch
related problems. In your case, I think that spyware removal will be close
enough to virus-related that they will be willing to help you. They cannot
provide help with the Microsoft Antispyware beta product--no support is
available for that. However--the root of your issue is that you had spyware
in place, removed it, and lost Internet connectivity. Describe the problem
that way and they will lead you through the fix.

That phone number is for the U.S. or Canada. In other parts of the world,
equivalent help is available--call your nearest Microsoft subsidiary. The
call itself may not be free, but the help will be.

Hi Bill,
I just got my internet connection working. I used the
WinsockXPfix.exe. that you mentioned (at
http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm)
It did do the job.
Thank you very very much for the good advice.
Even though you did give me this advice early on, I did not
have enough time with the internet to check it out( was
busy checking out the article ). However
today I did.

Thank You again.
By the way do you work at Microsoft?

Glad it did the job.

No - I don't work at Microsoft. I'm posting here as a volunteer. The
Microsoft employees posting here either post on their own time, and
generally not mentioning that connection--or use [MSFT] in their names or
signatures when posting as employees.
