System Restore Xp SP3

I am running a home-brew machine with XP Pro updated to SP3.

System Restore is set to run and appears to do just that, providing a
number of restore points.

For the first time today I have needed to restore and any of the
restore points that I choose run ok but at the end of the session I
get the message "Your Computer Cannot Be Restored To:"

Fortunately I have a back-up of the disc and restored from that but
as it took 3 hours to restore I would rather have System Restore!

Any of you brilliant people out there able to assist me please ?

Be sure you understand what System Restore is/does...
(It does nothing with the files you create, 99% of the time.)
