This message is to Paul B T Hodges

Paul: Back at ya. Could not post again on the old
message, must have run out of room. To answer an old
question,
Did you notice if it reported restoring any files ? No
notification, just a window with a task bar that moved
left to right and closed.

I could not disable simple file sharing in WinXP Home
Edition. My help system states:
Note Windows XP Home Edition-based computers always have
Simple File Sharing enabled. So it looks like I cannot
delete System Volume Information folders unless you have
something else up your sleeve.
Thanks
Bill

PS This feels like the never ending story.

If deleting the System Volume Information folders doesn't
fix this, we'll
try reinstalling system restore using the sr.inf file.

Sorry, you probably don't see the security tab, because
you have simple
file

Hi Bill,

Its the weekend ! Lets try and fix this before monday. I don't know where
you are located but I'm in London in the UK, and its looking pretty bleak
outside at the moment.

I don't know why I thought you had xp professional but never mind. Right
click on each System Volume Information folder and select properties. On the
general tab, untick read only, you will get a window pop up asking if you
want ot apply this to just the folder or all files and subfulders which is
the default, confirm all files and subfolders, another windows should pop up
entitled "Applying Attributes", and containing little flying documents.
When its finished , right click on "System Volume Information" again, and
select delete.

That last post was a bit of a bum steer.
Windows xp isn't very happy changing read only attributes through explorer.
Mine went on for 15mins saying it was changing the attributes and when it
came back, it hadnt. I only have ntfs file systems so I can't test this with
FAT.

There is a registry hack to enable full security in windows xp home, but I
can't lay my hands on it at the moment, and besides, I don't think it will
help as you are not using ntfs.

If yours doesn't change the attibutes, try going to a command prompt and
using the attrib command. I didn't have any success with this on ntfs file
systems, security locked me out, even as administrator, but it might let you
on a FAT file system. You'll need something along the lines of

ATTRIB -S -H "System Volume Information" /S

If you can't get this to work, then lets go for the reinstall. You;ll need
the following handy

Make sure you have the file \windows\inf\sr.inf on your system.
That you have applied sp1 and have the folder \windows\servicepackfiles\i386
You have the release CD.

You might want to do this in safe mode.

Go into the folder \windows\inf
and right click on sr.inf and select install.

It will do the install, but if its like this system with sp1 applied, it
will prompt you for the sp1 release cd, in which case point it at
\windows\servicepackfiles\i386 and also request the release cd, in my case,
I pointed it at a network share which held the release files, but you have
the cd.

Paul: Performed the reinstall in safe mode and it looks
like everything worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I need to do some more checking but I will get back to
you as soon as I'm sure it's fixed.
Thanks a million.
I live in Houston, TX. Been to the UK many times, love
it but not too keen on the weather. Have a great day and
thanks so much!!!
Very Best Regards,
Bill

Paul: You did it. Everything is working great.
Couldn't have done it without you. I learned a log.
Thanks so much. You have done a great job. Have a great
day.
Very Best Regards,
Bill
