I have a Client who says he can get into System Restore and see the various
dates on which a restore point was made but wont actually let him do a
system restore to any date. I haven't actually seen the problem first hand
but thought I would try to get an idea of what may be going on (and
solutions) before I visit.

He is using Windows XP Media Centre Edition. Could anyone give me a handle
on the potential cause (and solution) before I visit please?

Thanks.

Yep - Norton Internet Security software. Get rid of it.

In my original post I said <<he can get into System Restore and see the
various dates on which a restore point was made but wont actually let him do
a system restore to any date.>> He now tells me he gets an error message to
the effect "cannot restore at this date". Hopefully this may be helpful in
identifying the cause of the problem. I have passed on the suggestion of
booting up in Safe Mode as get-you-round option.

Regards.

As mentioned in another post, Norton is a very common cause of this
problem.

Let's see if System Restore will function in Safe Mode.

Boot into Safe Mode and perform a test restore using the following link.
