System Restore won't restore

I have many system restore points, including ones I
specifically set myself to avoid losses of programs. I
just had a $400. Movie Magic program crash and cannot
reinstall it. I NEED to restore, but it starts, shuts
down, and on restart says it cannot restore to that
point. I have tried many and all the same. Is there a
setting awry somewhere? Or is it never going to work? I
dread doing a complete recovery because I will lose
hundreds of files and Miscrosoft only gives you a few
anyway. Why should I lose one because of their product?
HELP!!!!! I bought XP BECAUSE of this feature!
