For the past few days I have been unable to do a system restore. System
restore is running and there are system checkpoints on most of the dates of
this month and last. No matter what day I choose it will not restore to the
earlier date. Have the max disk space chosen. I have a problem with
Internet Explorer and wish to restore to an earlier date and cannot do it.
I have restored this computer before so it has worked in the past. Nothing
has been changed. Is there any help for this?

There may be corrupted data in system Restore.
Turn off/on System Restore to delete corrupted files:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.
Click System Restore Settings on left side.
Check "Turn off System Restore", click OK, follow prompts and reboot.
This deletes ALL Restore Points including corruption.
Then go back and turn on system Restore and create a Restore Point.

I did what you said and created a new restore point yesterday and today my
machine will not restore to that point. I do not know what to do to make it
work.

Hello,
I see nothing at the link which mentions the particular problem I have.

I have done the whole procedure as suggested several times. Yesterday I did
the turn off, reboot, turn on, reboot, etc.etc. Everything shows that there
is no problem with System Restore.

Anyway, yesterday, when I finished supposedly fixing System Restore, I
waited a couple hours and then tried to restore to the point I had created
after the fix. It restored to that point with no problem and I thought I
had it fixed. However, today when I tried to restore to that same point it
goes through the whole restore process and when the computer restarts the
system restore window is showing with the statement at the top which says
your system cannot be restored to the chosen restore point. Does anyone
have a suggestion as to what to do to fix this program???

Thanks.

If you were to Restore once and then not later, what changed?
Can you create and use Restore Points once? Not the same one twice?

Otherwise you may have an application that causes the trouble once it
is used or enabled.

Check for viruses, spyware etc:

Fro troubleshooting, disable unnecessary applications in MSCONFIG
Start-up tab per step 8 on the above link.

Jupiter,

Do you mean that if nothing has changed between the present and the point I
am trying to restore to that it will not go back to that point? I thought I
could make the computer restore to a point even if everything is the same.
I would think I could restore to a point today and then restore again
tomorrow and go to the same point. Am I wrong?

As far as your suggestions re: viruses, spyware, etc. I have AdAware,
Spybot Search & Destroy, Norton System works, etc and all are up to date. I
cleaned out the registry with RegCleaner.
I tried running a diagnostic startup and doing a restore, Did not work. Do
you want me to try to disable all the startup in Selective startup in
msconfig? or what?

At this point do you think I should do a new install and then reinstall all
the programs I have installed over the past year?

Let me know.

Thanks

I was meaning if System Restore worked one time and did not work at a
later time, something has changed on the computer or else it would
still work.

You restored to a particular Restore Point and then the next day tried
the same Restore Point.
What happens if you do not use the same Restore Point a second time?

Jupiter,

Yesterday I shut off System Restore, rebooted, then turned it on again and
rebooted. This was suggested in one response to my plea for help. This is
about the sixth time I have done it. Anyway, when I did this it created a
new restore point yesterday. Today I tried to restore to that point and
again after the whole procedure finished the restore window comes up with a
message that my computer cannot be restored to that point. What do you
suggest?? I am thinking I will have to do a complete new install of Windows
XP.

Please let me know your thoughts on this.

Thanks.
