System Restore to DVD

I would like to creat a complete backup of my entire hard
drive. In particular the system files etc.. However, the
restore backup files are large. Is there a good method of
creating a backup copy and storing in on DVD for archive
purposes. Would a retore point stored on DVD allow me to
return to an earlier or later state (by later I mean more
of the patches than on the original install disk) in the
event of a system crash

Why not just get your self one of the commercially available imaging
programs such as Symantec's Ghost or PowerQuest's Drive Image (my favorite)
and make your self multiple images at times deemed appropriate in your case.
If you do, you can disable the restore function of Windows which will make
your total image much smaller. Besides, DriveImage and I think Ghost too,
can compress the final image.

If you do decide to go this route, I would suggest that you not backup
directly to DVD but instead, backup to another drive or partition that has
enough space to hold the finished image and then, burn it to the DVD from
this image. The reason is that if you allow one of these programs to do it
directly, it will be very slow.

Bought Norton system works 2003 Pro has ghost what a
great program burns to cd, it will compress if you want
(you might lose a little quality in images or video files
by compressing 4-6cds) but I can burn 4GB to cd r in about
15-20minutes, restore put in disk reboot about 20 minutes
good as new. (amd 2400). Hope this helps.
