Hi I just did a fresh install on my computer with Windows XP Home and Service
Pack 2. Everything is working fine till now however system restore fails to
start when I click on the link from the start menu it says that "System
Restore is unable to protect my computer". The Tab in the system properties
is missing and when I go into service the service is listed as starting up
automatically but it didn't start! If I click start the same error message
appears.

In the Event Viewer the error in Service Control Manager states that the
system cannot find the path specified however the programme is installed and
the shortcut in the start menu does find its target.

Any suggestions?

I obviously checked the help and troubleshooting and also read the
newsgroup....I posted the question because I didn't as yet find a solution.
Thanks!

I provided a possible solution for a similar problem as follows:

If your primary problem is System Restore Tab missing, it may be the same
problem I have just solved. It relates to Registry.
However, you'd better see if System Restore is working or not. The methods
you can try is listed here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302796/

In my case, the function started and worked. So, I tried someone's
suggestion as follows:
1. Click Start, click Run, and then type "regedit" in the Open box, and then
press Enter.
2. Locate the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore.
3. Look for a "DisableSR" in the right window. If a "DisableSR" value
doesn't exist, go to the Edit menu, select New, DWORD value, and create the
value.
Set the value to 0 to enable System Restore (the value 1 to disable System
REstore).
4. Then close Regedit and restart PC.

In my case, the Tab is back.
