System Restore is unable to restore on a 4 month old Vista machine. After
rebooting and logging in message says (System restore unable to restore your
files due to an unknown error). The reason I was trying to restore is the
wife was unable to access many programs on her login. When you clicked the
start button on her login the program files were empty and we were prompted
to do system restore. Everything was fine on my login and we are both set up
as administrators. I also tried system restore from the start repair boot
process same thing. Reading other posts I do not use norton antivirus but
avast's free one. The restore option worked fine a couple weeks ago when a
software install caused me issues.

Any help or guidance would be helpfull!

try remove the antivirus. if issues not solve, clean install the operating
system (delete partition). i suggest don't use free software - free software
mostly ain't do good -- try ZoneAlarm.Com

system restore was and is always a useless feature of windows -

how to disable system restore in windows vista 32?

Control Panel > System > System Protection on the left
pane > and uncheck your boot disk under Automatic restore points.

I have tried restore from safe mode. I have tried it with antivirus turned
off. I have tried the last 5 restore points shown. I have tried it from both
our sign ons. unsuccesful due to unknown error.

The funny thing is on my logon everything is fine eexcept for this. I tried
a bunch of programs just to make sure. I thopught about just deleting her
profile and assigning another but that doesnt solve the system restore issue.

reply to t-4-2....i always manual due a restore point before installing any
software.

Update: After running sfc/scannow this seems to have gotten her functional
again. I did try and run system restore again but it still is not able to
restore to an earlier point. When I ran sfc/scannow it did say it found
corrupt files it could not repair. I went to windows/logs/cbs but was unable
to identify what those files were. Does anyone know how to read this log to
possible identify the corrupted files and manually repair?
