Is there a way to prevent certain directories/folders from being
included in the System Restore? Anti-virus software updates itself
several times a day. This produces a hefty burden on the back-up
procedures as many files have to be copied. I have learnt my lesson of
not backing up the SVI directories/folders and so would like to know if
there is an alternative method?

Andrew,

Thank you for your reply, but, I think I did not explain myself fully.
The System Restore only collates details for certain folders and file
extensions. I want to extend this list to exclude the anti-virus
directories.

Hi Richard,

I would not recommend this, but here's a solution.

Thank you for your reply, Bert. I have found that there is a file called
filelist.xml in c:\windows\system32\Restore that holds the directory and
files names that are included in and excluded from by rstrui.exe and
hence the SVI directory. They appear to be the same as those listed on
your web site. Would this be the file to modify to get the results I
desire?
