How long do items stay in System Restore, and is it possible to
change the duration?

You've had two answers to your previous post in windowsxp.general yesterday.
have you not seen them?

And BTW, munge your email address for posting to newsgroups - if this is
your real address you will now get LOADS of spam....

For some reason I have not been able to see either my original posting nor
any answers to the posting I made yesterday to windowsxp.general! That's why
I asked again. I assumed the original message had been lost. Incedently I
still can't see any such message in the windowsxp.general news group!

Are you subscribing to this group on the MS news server or are you using the
NTL news server? (msnews.microsoft.com - it's free and requires no log-in.
In OE go to Tools-Accounts-Add-News)

And PLEASE munge your email address. Don't know how to?

Look here:

I'm using the msnews server. I've just unsubscribed and then
resubscribed to windowsxp.general, and I still can't see my original
message!

This in itself seems to be an interesting question!

They stay until the system restore archive reaches the maximum
allowable size, after which the oldest restore points are dropped as
needed so as to make room for new ones.

To adjust the size of the system restore archive use Control Panel -
System - System Restore and click on the Settings button. Generally a
maximum size of 800 to 1,000 mb is fully adequate to retain a week to
10 days worth of restore points, and going back further than that with
system restore is generally not advisable.

For more information about system restore see MVP Bert Kinney's System
Restore pages: http://bertk.mvps.org/index.html

Good luck

Thanks for the info. I only asked as I thought that some files in the
"restore" area seemed to have been there rather a long time. I already made
use of the "size" of area feature. Anyway, I was just interested!
