System restore problems

Having had difficulties with Internet Explorer I have been unable to find a
cure for, I thought I would try system restore.

I went back to my first restore point and found that the problems I
experienced earlier were not happening but it was evident that there would
be a lot of work to do to get back to status quo.

I then tried a later restore point only to find my earlier troubles with IE
were apparent at that date. I decided to try a 'midway' restore point but
found that it also had my IE problems.

I decided to go back to my first restore point only to find that it was not
now available and the earliest that was available does not eliminate my
problem.

Is there any way I can return to my effective restore point please?

No, I just moved from one to the other. I presumed it would leave everything
as it was.

I wouldn't consider that silly, actually. I would consider it
expected user behavior, particularly since System Restore offers
it.

Have you ever tried to solve the problem directly? What is the
problem anyway? If all else fails, a repair installation could
do the trick, as described on http://winhlp.com/ .

I'm not sure yet if Vista will enable me to run a repair installation. I
have been very busy of late but will try it soon. My problems are indicated
in this post I put in a couple of weeks ago.

How can I keep my broadband connection permanently connected (when PC turned
on).
When I call upon Internet Explorer it tells me 'connecting' and after some
time I get access, however when I come out of IE it disconnects. If I wish
to go back into the internet I have to wait for it to reconnect again.
This seems to be relevant to an earlier posting of mine where I have said I
am unable to activate a web link from an incoming e mail.
Suggestions are much appreciated.

If I cannot resolve the problem I will have to re-install Vista with all
it's associated hassle!

this sounds like a browser setting. Tools, Internet options,
Connections, could you have a look there? You don't want the
browser to dial.

do you have any third-party software installed that could have
something to do with the Internet connection? Did your Internet
access service provider give you a CD, by any chance?

Any other third-party software, like security-related stuff?

I had Norton 2007 fitted but my last restore removed that.
My service provider is Virgin and the broadband comes along with my TV and
telephone, therefore no CD.
I'm away now Hans Georg for a week and I think that on my return I will re
install Vista from scratch. Your efforts have been much appreciated, I wish
I could help you with something but it would have to be other than a
computer!!!

it was just one of those suspicions. Unfortunately there is a
whole range of possible causes, difficult to hit the right one
quickly.
