To try to fix erratic cursor movement the Dell tech had
me run a repair from the XP cd. After doing this nothing
on my computer was working correctly and I kept getting
error messages that Dell said were 'very bad'. So, I
tried to restore to an earlier point, but all of my
restore points were gone. I'm assuming this is due to
running the repair, but is there any way I can get them
back? I'm trying to avoid having to re-install Win ME
then re-install the Win XP upgrade.

Once the Restore Points are gone, there is no getting them back.

Check for corrupted or missing System files:
Start/Run
Type "cmd" ENTER
Type "sfc /scannow" ENTER
Have Windows XP CD available.

Try another Repair Installation:

Windows Updates will need to be reinstalled.
Data should be safe, back-up important data just in case.
Install Service Pack first and by itself.
Then install ALL Critical Updates no more than 4 at a time,

Disconnect the network/modem cable before starting repair and do NOT
reconnect the cable until repair is completed and firewall is
installed/enabled.
