System Restore not working?

Hi,

I tried to System Restore, but all of the dates I tried for last week
(Friday back through Monday) come back with "Restore Unsuccessful" (or words
to that effect).

What's going on? Do I have to just keep on trying until I find one that
works?

TIA

it seems to me that
maybe you have a
couple of problems.

one being that required
a system restored to a
functional date and two,
the system restore feature
itself is faulty.

what you might want
to do is a simple "repair
installation" with your
windows setup cd.

the repair installation
will repair and replace
missing and corrupted
system files with genuine
ones from the cd.

in addition, the process
will make a brand new
restore point and delete
all the prior ones.

Just out of curiosity, what antivirus program do you have running on your
computer? Some AV programs can interfere with System Restore.

To see if this may be the case try running System Restore in Safe mode.

Good luck

How do I start up in Safe Mode?

Tap F8 on start up/Boot up until you get a Boot up options select safe Mode.
There try to restore your operating system by doing this:
Click Start >> All programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> System Restore.

To boot into Safe Mode, restart your computer. Keep hitting the F8 key until you
see the Windows Advanced Options Menu. Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to
select Safe Mode from the list.

You can also use this free program to configure your computer to boot into Safe
Mode.

As for Norton AV and System Restore, take a look at this web site.

No luck. I started in safe mode, didn't restore. I turned everything in
Norton Utilities off - same message. I turned off NU and started in safe
mode - still didn't work.

I guess I better dump some money on an extra backup drive because it looks
like system restore will never work again.

Thanks.

Steve,

See if you can restore from a Safe Mode command prompt:

If you can't get System Restore working properly, you may have to delete all of
your restore points. Take a look at this article for more info.

How to turn off and turn on System Restore in Windows XP

If this doesn't solve the problem, you can try reinstalling System Restore.

Finally, System Restore should never be relied on in place of a sound backup
strategy. Whether it works or not isn't why you should "dump some money on an
extra backup drive". Also, any drive storing backup files should be an external
drive.

Good luck
