System Restore not working

Is there something that I should know about SR in a dual boot scenario?
Because that's the only reason that I can think of as to why I tried to SR
to a few hours earlier and after a whole night of trying it still hadn't
finished.
I'd installed a new DVD Burner (Liteon Lightscribe) and was trying to
install the Nero 7 Suite that comes with it. The Nero wouldn't finish
installing for some reason despite compatibility mode being set. Then it
wouldn't uninstall (not surprising) so I thought that SR would do the
trick...NO!
I had to do the registry clean up thing which took 2 hours at least.

It is a known issue that XP deletes all Vista's System Restore points in
a dual-boot situation where the Vista drive is not hidden from XP. See
MVP Bert Kinney's information about this:

You might also want to look at the rest of Bert's Vista System Restore
articles.

When dual booting with XP the restore point in Vista are deleted every time
you boot to XP. I've tried hiding the Vista partition and, frankly, it
doesn't work. Other alternatives include using a third party boot manager
or, if you have Vista Ultimate using bitlocker encryption. Currently i'm
using bitlocker to prevent the loss of restore points.

That sounds a good idea. Does it cause any problems accessing drives from
the other system? Not familiar with it, I can see I'll have to do some
reading.
Regarding XP deleting Vista SR. Interestingly I did a safe mode "Last known
good configuration" with my Vista the other day, it worked.

I can't use it as I don't have a TPM...I guess I'll have to buy myself a
flash module or similar.

You can use BitLocker without TPM...
