System Restore not working properly?

I have a PC running XP Home SP1 with an 80GB hard drive. System
Restore is enabled on my machine, but I have reason to suspect it is not
working properly. Let me explain:

A couple of months ago, I had to reformat my computer's hard drive.
This was sucessful. However, I noticed System Restore would only keep
restore points for about 3-4 days before deleting all of them, even though
it was set to use 12% of the hard drive. I knew that wasn't right. So I
turned off System Restore, rebooted, turned it back on, and then 3.5 weeks
went by where it created restore points every day. I figured the problem
was fixed.

About a week ago, I lowered the System Restore hard drive usage to
8%. A couple of days went by with no restore points, which I figured was
logical since it had less space to use. One was created yesterday. Again,
I figured everything was working fine.

But last night, before going to bed, I checked System Restore and ALL
restore points were erased! That doens't make sense. I realize System
Restore has to eventually delete restore points to have room, but it's only
supposed to delete the older ones first, not ALL of them at once. Right?
And it has 8% of an 80GB hard drive to work with, so it should be several
weeks, if not months, before it deletes anything.

So that's it. Any ideas how to fix this glitch? Thanks for your
time.

Sorry not to answer your question, but it appears you know much more than I do, and I need your help!
I installed a free virus protection program last night (Avast4home from avast.com), but I believe I made a mistake and left my old Norton anti-virus running. When I went to turn on the computer this morning, I got the welcome screen and tried to sign in using my password (I am the system administrator and my roommate is the other user); after that I got the welcome screen with my name and it said "loading your personal settings" as usual and then it never went beyond that. After waiting 20 minutes with that screen I tried turning off and on the computer and got the same thing; tried that three times. Then I went to the Microsoft site and saw the instructions for starting by pressing F8 and then "Last Known Good Configuration" and then used the arrow to Windows XP, and then enter. At that point I was once again right back where I was before doing that, with the situation again where I got to the welcome screen with "loading your personal settings" and still nothing further happened. Forgive me for asking you a question when you yourself were looking for help.

Well, there are people on this board who know a lot more about Windows
XP than me. I guess if I was in your situation, I would boot into Safe Mode
and do a System Restore from there.
