I tried System Restore on a pc running XP after an installation of Office 03
didn't work out so well. SR seemed to do what it was supposed to, and
rebooted, and then after the Windows XP graphic appeared, the screen went
blank. Now all I have is the mouse arrow; I can move it around, but nothing
else. Each restart is the same, whether I try it in Safe Mode or anything
else.

Have I killed my PC? Please say no...

Hi Matt,

Try starting Windows in VGA Mode, and then open System Restore interface. Click "Undo my last restoration". Does that help?

No luck. Starting Windows in VGA Mode has the same result as not pressing F8
at all--a blank screen other than the (moveable) mouse arrow. The only action
that produces a different result is starting in Safe Mode, where I see "Safe
Mode" on the screen, but nothing else besides the mouse arrow.

Is it time to do something drastic like re-installing Windows?

Thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt,

If you're unable to launch (or view) the System Restore interface, these are the possible options that I can think of:

- Try restoring the System State as adviced in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307545
- A Repair installation of Windows XP
