System Restore....HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have winxp sp2 home. My system restore is acting up. This is first time of
using system restore. The restore itself seemed to work, but i lost things
like my settings,i.e wallpaper, my internet connection, as in i would have to
re-run internet connction wizard again, certain programmes that were already
installed weeks before i had to system restore. I lost all pictures and other
files in my documents. It is as if i had to start pc from scratch when first
got it, as it comes up 'set up my pc'. I did un-do restoration and i got my
settings back. My settings are back, i.e wallpaper, internet connection, my
documents etc, and i managed to erase the original problem that caused me to
use system restore in first place. I then tried to use system restore again
to see if it would work this time and i had same prob, restoring pc as if it
were new i.e loss of wallpaper, programmes missing, loss of my connection set
up etc. Shouldn't sytsem restore be there to restore as its supposed to on a
certain date and not as if you're starting pc from scratch??? I also created
restore points too, but this didnt seem to work either. If anyone has
suggestions, it would be great help.Thank you

Hi,

System Restore does not monitor personal data files. So I suspect they
were still on the disk.

Here is a description of System Restore:
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/description.html

How far back were you trying to restore to?

The further back you go, the greater chance other problems can arise. As
far as applications that were installed after the restore point being
restored to, System Restore will remove all file for that application
that are monitored files types, and it's registry entries. For best
results, System Restore should be used ASAP after a problem is detected.

Are restore points being automatically created every day?

Hi,
Thank you for your reply

When you say that system restore does not monitor personal data files and
that they maybe still on disk, do you mean the hard drive disk? I have 2
drives C &D.How easy is it to find these personal data files to restore them?
And would i need to re-install things like my interenet connection (i have
wireless livebox), and setup my email acoount in Outlook express again, as
these seems to be the problem more than anything. As i've i've previously
said, it's as if i'm starting pc from brand new.

In answer to your questions........
I was only going back a few days before problem started, and any programmes
on pc at time had been installed weeks before, so i really should not have
lost things like my interenet set-up etc.

And secondly, yes restore points are being created automatically every day.
Which i have tried too.

Things like wallpapers etc i'm not too fussed about, but as i've said i
think it's odd if i use system restore and i then have to start pc more or
less from scratch by having to set up again things like my internet
connection and outlook express wizard. I'm pretty new to XP, and pc came with
XP on it (no disk), so i might be being a bit of dunce about all this, but i
certainly didnt have this problem when i used winME lol. Anymore suggestions
would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Yes.

Do a search for the file type would work. For image files search on
*.jpg for jpg files. For MS-Word files search for *.doc

If the wireless connection was functioning at the time the restore point
you are going back to was created, it should not be affected by the
restore. System restore does not monitor email accounts, and they should
not be affected either. It's being to sound like you are using a restore
option other then System Restore.

Just to confirm, you are using this process?

That's correct.
