Yo-

Professionals recommended against putting too much faith in system restore.
Helpful comments. Do people also recommend against putting much faith in
Norton GoBack or rollback products like it? Maybe people just aren't
impressed with the current state of Microsoft's roll back?

I consider System Restore a first attempt action that often does work but is
not reliable enough to count on as the only backup strategy and it was not
intended for that. Within the operating system you also can use the built in
NTbackup [not installed on XP Home though you can get it] to backup files
and the System State. The System State includes a backup of the registry and
local users and groups and by default also backs up critical system files. I
have not tried Norton GoBack but I am partial to an imaging program like
Norton Ghost that can make an image of your whole system drive that can be
restored in minutes. Ghost also allows you to open an image and extract only
needed files from it. As with any backup program you need to develop a
backup strategy that includes a schedule you adhere to. Too often users have
backups but they are a year old. Though that can be better than nothing
having fairly recent backups is a huge plus.
