System Restore Fails

I am using Windows XP SR1. It came on a new Gateway 500
computer.

I installed a spyware program and foolishly deleted all
the files it said were spyware. Thereafter about 20
programs ceased to work or ceased to work fully. There
was a system restore point at that date. I attempted
System Restore and it hung on the screen that says that,
if you click on 'next' it will begin to restore the
system.

Then I rebooted and F8'ted till I got the Safe Menu and
chose Safe Mode. I then attempted to use System Restore
and it worked as though it was doing something and did
not give any error messages. But, when I rebooted, a
message appeared on my screen saying that the restore had
failed.

This Restore point was only two days ago.

I am not too happy with Windows XP. It seems to have
more problems than Windows 98.

Thank you for any help.

Stenenson;
What spyware program?
Some have a "Quarantine" feature, Ad-Aware does.
Look in Help of the application to see.

Search for and repair damages system files:
Start/Run
Type "cmd" ENTER
Type "sfc /scannow" ENTER
Have your Windows XP CD available

You may have to reinstall the programs.

For system Restore.
There may be corruption in the System Restore files.
Turn off/on System Restore to delete corrupted files:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.
Click System Restore Settings on left side.
Check "Turn off System Restore", click OK, follow prompts and reboot.
This deletes all Restore Points including corruption.
Then go back and turn on system Restore and create a Restore Point.

It is a little unfair to blame Windows XP because you installed
spyware and then possibly let another applicastio delete to much.
