Steve

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 running windows XP. My
system restore used to work great - all kinds of restore
points. I caught a virus in June of last year which
affected some registy files. As a result, to get rid of
it - I had to reset the system restore. From that point
until this past December, everything was fine - I'd have
anywhere from 2-6 restore points/week all the way back to
June. However, around mid-december, my restore points
were all gone. I set some manually, and had others set
by the system, but after a few days - these would
disappear. Any ideas? Should I reinstall windows? Will
this do it? Please help. Thanks, Steve

I don't know if this applies to you, but one of the
reasons for fewer restore points is that the hard drive is
filling up and therefore there is less space for Windows
to store them. To check on how much space you've alloted
to system restore go:

Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then
double-click System. In the System Properties dialog box,
click the System Restore tab.

System Restore requires at least 200 MB of available space
on the hard disk (on the partition that contains your
operating system folder). For best performance and
protection, you should allocate more space.

By default, when the operating system installs System
Restore on your computer, it allocates approximately 12
percent of the available disk space to System Restore to
archive restore points.

Check both your hard drive free space available, and the
system restore disk space use setting. Open the my
computer and right click your primary drive for used and
free space. Right click my computer, select properties,
then the system restore tab, to get at the system restore
space use amount setting, ( it should be set to maximum
which is 12%. Also run another virus scan too to be safe.
Run the disk cleanup tool to gain more free space.

Steve;
Many things can cause loss of Restore Points, when they are gone, they
are gone and can not be recovered or used.
Some of the things are:
Available space on hard drive
Computer usage
Space you dedicate to System Restore

If you use Real Player, try doing without it for a few days:

And others.
