System Restore and System Volume Information

I have turned off System Restore on my slave HDD in an attempt to regain the
space on it reserved for System Volume Information, but find that this has
made virtually no difference to the free space available and there still
seems to be about 10% of the drive showing as reserved space for system use.
I understood that if System Restore was turned off or reserved space reduced
to a minimum on a drive other than C drive, then the whole of the drive would
be available for files, but this doesn't appear to be the case.

Please can anyone explain how to regain the use of all of the drive space
for user files.

Thanks Steve, but that was the first thing I did after disabling System
Restore on that drive. I also set the Recycle Bin to 0 bytes but analyzing
the disc with Diskeeper still shows about 10% of the disc with hatched green
lines indicating System Volume Information space reserved.

I think I may give up and buy a larger drive for keeping backup files on,
unless anybody has another solution.

Did you check available diskspace via Windows Explorer for the drive before
and after and did you verify that it shows that restore is shut off for that
drive in System Properties? Disk drives are dirt cheap. I saw Best Buy has a
120 MB Seagate for $29 after rebates last week. Maybe it is time to start
filling out your Christmas wish list. --- Steve

Windows Explorer reported the same amount of disk space before and after
turning off System Restore and making the Recycler 0 bytes.

I have just ordered a new WD 160Gb Caviar drive but this is costing me
£53.00 UK money, but I will have adequate storage, although it won't be
difficult to fill it up!

Thanks for your suggestions.

Offhand I do not know why you see the discrepancy. Wow they rip you off in
the UK for hardware or do not offer many rebates at your local retailers.
You will enjoy the extra space though and it sounds like you were trying to
put off the inevitable. It is always nice to have a bigger warehouse. ---
