Having a problem with system restore. It seems to work ok in safe mode but
get the following message when trying to run in normal mode. "System Restore
is not able to protect your computer. Please restart your computer and then
run System Restore again." Restarting computer does not clear the problem.
I have gone through Bert K.'s System Restore Failures check list but still
have the problem. Any soulutions would be appreciated.

thanks

Highpoint drivers installed? If yes, this article may help:

Hi Hal, the article gives a few valuable hints:
1. look at the system event log und share it with us
2. turn off system restore and try again
3. Check all your unsigned drivers
4. use method 2 and hide the system folders
5. look at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302796/EN-US/ to use
Troubleshooting System Restore

Hi Rolf,

Restore seems to be working ok at the present time. I downloaded CCleaner
and cleaned up the reg. files and since that it seems to be ok. Is there a
way to find a list all unsigned drivers?

When I checked the system event log, I have a ton of errors for DCOM and
Service Control Manager but none for sr.

I also can not download and install windows updates using automatic system.
Get error message #0x800706ba. Have contacted MicroSoft on this problem but
to date have not received an adequate fix. I have tried the following steps:
1. stop and restart auto service
2. turning off firewall and antivirus
3. cleaned windows update temporary folder
4. renamed catroot2 folder to cr2old

Above steps did not help.

Thanks
Hal

Hi Hal, to me that all smells like a corrupted system und I would
certainly save the disk to another disk and then do a *repair* install
with the original install cd.
This may or may not work with OEM CDs.

Hi Hal, doeing a search with help from the start menue with that string
I find hints to MS office. MS office can be updated using microsoft
update rather then windows update.

Can you get the list of missing updates using windows update in expert
mode?

Rolf

Hi Rolf,

Thanks for the info. I found approx. 35 unsigned drivers on the machine.
Will now start the process of getting rid of those not wanted and will
disable the other one at at time to see if one of them is causing the
problem. Saving you last suggestion as a last resort as not sure I have the
knowledge to go throught that process. May have to take to an expert and let
them do a new insatll of xp.

regards
Hal
