Hi, I just installed a new version of Vista on my computer, but for some
reason, in the middle of something, it just goes into a soft reboot without
warning. It has happened many times; I don't know what happened. I just
installed Vista, and only have a handlful of programs on the computer,
including Limewire, but I never had this problem before. Sounds familiar to
anyone, or any advice please?

Thanks.

Is there any pattern to the reboots, like does it happen when you are using
IE? From your post, can we assume there are no error messages?
Have you checked for log entries in <system drive>\Windows\Logs?
As Vista is probably using more/all of your installed memory on a regular
basis, have you run a stress test on your memory? If not, two good tools
are: Memtest86 and Prime95.

First of all thanks for the reply. No there is no pattern; the first time it
happened was when I had just installed an external hard drive; but I am
positive. I forgot to mention that most of the time, it doesn't even reboot,
but the screen just goes blank, like if you turn the computer off, except it
stays on. I will try to monitor it more closely and see if there is a
pattern. I have 1G of memory so I don't see how it could be a memory problem
since I am not running several problems at the same time... Can limewire have
anything to do with it? On a previous installation (XP platform), my computer
would slow considerable down, and only picks up speed when I turn off
Limewire....Anyway, thanks again for your help; I will try to be more
specific and follow up closely; it's just frustrating because I just had the
harddrive reformatted and installed Vista for the first time, so I don't have
that many programs to take up so much memory...

Tony.

I have a a smiliar and it appears to have been related to a external
USB harddrive. It seems that when the dirive gets hot it begins to
generate errors and the computer does not handle the error. In one
instance my PC would not boot until I disconnected the drive.

I just bought a Dell Inspiron 1501 with Windows Vista Business, a couple of
months ago. I've had the same problem, with the execption that the screen
goes 'blue' and then the restart automatically. Dell has tried to fix the
problem 'remotely' but finally decided it was software oriented. I've been
unable to find any patches or updates for Vista that addresses the problem. I
am thinking of trying to reinstall XP Pro and forget the whole "Vista
Experience". All the fluff is not worth the headaches.
