Hi, Can anyone tell me how to check the state of the
system resources in XP? In windows 98 it was in explorer
under 'about windows' but in xp this just tells me the
total resources not how much is currently in use. I used
to check it regularly so I could reboot before it got so
low that programs started playing up. Now I can only guess
by the way programs are running. I've tried looking in
help but it doesn't seem to mention it.

That's got loads of info about all sorts of exotic things
including different types of memory, but which bit is the
equivalent of the old 'system resources 392k, available
resources 25%'. Is it CPU usage or physical memory?

System resources in the Windows 9x sense (User Resources and GDI Resources)
are a non-issue in Windows XP. One of the factors that makes XP more stable
than 9x.

A good read on system resources;

"System Resources" as the term was used in Windows 95/98/Me is
basically irrelevant in Windows XP because the two 64K 16 bit Resource
Heaps (which is what system resources in Windows 95/98/Me was all
about) have been dropped and all of the Resource Heaps in Windows XP
are 32 bit. This means they can be (in theory at least) up to 4 gb
each in total size. Therefore if System Resources were reported on
the same basis as Windows 95/98/Me they would always show something
like 99.999% free.

This use of all 32 bit Resource Heaps is also one reason why some 16
bit applications cannot be used under Windows XP.

Note that some Windows XP related documents do use the term "system
resources" but the meaning and context of this is totally different
from what that term means in Windows 95/98/Me.

Hope this clarifies the situation.

Good luck
