I've been getting "out of system resources" on my xp once or twice a
week. The only solution Iknow of is to reboot. Just wondering if
there's any freeware that reduces system resources when needed.
Thanks

Well XP itself is known to be a resource hog. Do you have at least 128 MB
of memory?

It's probably various applications that are eating up resources. Make sure
you know exactly what is running on your computer. Look through the task
manager's list and make sure all that software should be running.

It's a good idea to run ad-aware to make sure there aren't spyware/adware
background processes.

By the book, you can only run out of resources if:-

You have set an upper limit on the page file, or
your disk is full.

Thanks. I'll check to see if I have an upper limit on page file. I do
use spypot and adaware. I use a startup manager to keep unwanted
programs from starting plus a ram manager to clear memory when it gets
too high. So far none of that helps with system resources.

How much RAM do you have in your system.
If you having less RAM, try to avoid open too many programs at the
same time (multitasking).
If you need to do alot of multitasking works then try to upgrade your
system RAM. They are dirt cheap nowadays.

I would suggest using

Microsoft AntiSpyware
www.microsoft.com
and

InControl
http://www.virtuoza.com/InControl/product.php
I have 256 mb ram.

I went to the virtuoza site and couldn't see a freeware version of the
software to try. It seems to do the same thing as the application I've
been using for several years but I couldn't tell. This is my current
program for managing software:

Starter is yet another startup manager, that allows you to view and
manage all the programs that are starting automatically whenever Windows
boots.

It lists all the hidden registry entries, as well as the common Startup
Folder items as well. You can choose to safely disable selected entries,
edit them or delete them altogether (if you know what you re doing).
Expert users can even add their own entries.

Secondary purpose is to list all the running processes with possibility
to view extended process' information (such as used DLLs, memory usage,
thread count, priorities etc.), and to terminate selected process (even
a Windows NT service, having enough access rights).

Very nice interface, and easy to use!
