system resources getting used up much faster then previously

Why? I cleared all temp files. I hav no spyware, malware, viruses, etc.

Please help.

Exactly what does "system resources getting used up much faster then
previously" mean? What numbers are you seeing and where?

OK. For the future, that's the way you should describe such a problem. That
has nothing to do with anything with a name like "system resources."

You say "I hav no spyware, malware, viruses, etc." How do you know that?
What products did you use to test, and how recently have they been updated?

I'm not claiming that malware is necessrily your problem, but these days
it's very often the cause of an otherwise unexplained slowdown. Your first
step in troubleshooting should be to completely rule out that possibility,
so I recommend that you go to Malke's Malware Removal site at
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware and follow
the instructions there.
 
Most of what listed at Malke site had already been done, except that safe
mode
and java 5 update 10. Both of those have now been completed with no
intrusions found.

I mean none that were found with updated removal tools, most of which were
mentioned on his site.

When that happens open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc).
Go to the Processes tab and click twice on the CPU column header.
That will sort the list of processes into descending order based on
CPU usage, with the highest usage items at the top.

Make a list of the 5 or 6 highest usage items and their CPU usage
values (ignore the System Idle Process) and post that information back
here.

Some of these jump between the top 5 and down to 10th or 15th only to jump
back up to the top five. It was at 100%when I started copying these and 3
minutes later it is now variing between 55% and 75%

Ive change nothing and opened no new apps and now it is spending much time
around 15-25%, but occasionally jumping up to 75% The top processes are the
same as above and still jumping all around. Like that systen at 28k, is
sometimes the first, second, but more often the 4th, 5th or 6th and just as
often it is was way down on the list. Although the iexplor.exe is now at
32000k

Back a few hours later I tried to watch a video. I used to be able to do
this, but now sound and video are jumpy but cpu usage was going between 20
and 50%, but after 5 minutes it is 50 to 90% and:

opening that video in vlc.exe pushed it past its limit, but I used to be
able to do this AND I just closed vlc and it is staying at 90% and
everything is so SLOW. Its like it never let go of the vlc processing....I
looked again before sending this and it is 100% and

iexplore 3800k
taskmgr 2400k
ICQ 8800k
yahoo messenger 7400k
tea timer 6400k...still at 100%

I closed ICQ and yahoo and that did not help. Everything is so slow......one
hour later and it is ok and 0 to 25% cpu usage.
 
I m doing nothing now. One web page opened oe opened. Win explorer opened.
ICQ and yahoo IM opened. That;s all and it jumps between 5and 90 percent and
everythere in between. The GUI is so slow. I click on a menu and it takes 5
seconds to engage. I click to move from sent mail to in coming mail and that
takes 12 seconds to refresh the screen. WTF??

While typing this it even stopped taking my text key strokes while it
received mail.

I have never experienced this before. Please help.

Okay. You do have quite a bit open on your computer when you did
this:
Internet explorer (iexplore.exe) - if it has high CPU usage you must
be connected to a pretty "busy" web site or something. What version
of Internet Explorer do you have - 6 or 7? And what was the actual
*CPU* percent for this item?

Zone Alarm firewal (vsmon) - this item has been problematic for many
people. Consider looking at an alternative, such as a router with NAT
protection.

Outlook Express (msimn.exe) - If this has high CPU usage you must be
actively downloading mail or compacting mailboxes, or similar. If it
is just open and sitting there the CPU usage should be showing 00.


What antivirus and antispyware software do you use? Spybot Search
and Destroy, even with Teatimer installed, is not good enough by
itself to fully protect your computer.

Go to one of the following free scanning web sites and do a scan of
your system as a double check to ensure that nothing has gotten past
your protections.

It was just sitting there. I sent and received and it did not change. I
closed it and it did not change for 10 minutes, then went to 2000k and now
back up to 10000k even though oe is closed for 15 minutes now. Of course I
do have this one Email here opened.

Done 2nd and 3rd from above. Doing right now the panda scan. Everything is
so slow. These are taking forever. So far nothing found, except for some
cookies which I deleted. I have tried so many on line scans, downloaded
applications,,etc and my SLOW problem persists. I will perform the 1st, 4th
and 5th above, but not holding my breath. I think my problem is not an
intrusion. Anymore ideas?
 
Wrote zeros to entire HDD. Reinstalled xp and I have the same problem.
Security apps are installed, updated and run frequently.

Just now it got so slow that it eventually froze. Only IE was opened.
