In order to add a scanner I must update my Windows 98 to
Windows home XP. The box (unopened) says I should have
128MB of RAM. I have 96MB 73% free, and I don't want to
purchase more right now. Should I go ahead and load XP?
Will it operate. I have a Pentium II. About 5 years old.

If it runs at all it will be excruciatingly sloooooow.

Check to see how much RAM your computer will support, many
older PII class systems will be limited to some small by
today's standards, RAM. Perhaps two 180 MB sticks is all
you can have. But RAM for your old computer would be
PC100/133 and very cheap.

I suggest you upgrade to the maximum or at least 256 total.
Your 96 is probably a 32 and a 64, if the board will support
a 256 stick put it in the slot that is used by the 64 and
move the 64 to the 32 slot, many mobo want the biggest RAM
in the O slot.

Just an an upgrade aside. I just upgraded a Pentium II 100 MHz box with
320 MB RAM from Win98 to XP. It seems to be running faster with XP. It
is still slooooooooooooow. Just not quite as slooooooow.

There was no such creature as a Pentium II 100 Mhz.
