After removing win32/pepatch in safe mode with AVG, my pc would not boot to
the desktop. Instead it continues to reboot before it even gets to windows
logon screen. So I inserted my Windows XP Pro disc and performed a repair
install on the C drive. It installed the necessary files and rebooted
automatically, but when after it rebooted it went into the complete windows
installation which takes 40-50 minutes. Is it supposed to go through this
process if I want to keep all my personal files? Or is it going to do a clean
install if this process continues? I want to keep all my personal files.

That is what a repair install is, a reinstall of the OS over what is already
there, provided it was done correctly you won't loose anything

I can confrm what the previous posters said. I recently did a Windows XP
Home repair reinstall and it took about 50 minutes. Also, none of my
installed programs, settings, data, email, etc., were lost or altered.

However, you should know that in my case, my XP Home CD included SP2. After
the repair, all Windows XP Home updates that I had installed were lost. I
had to go back to Windows update and install about 95 updates (mostly
security related). I did not have SP3 installed.
