I read someone elses post... having the same probem... but only
after Apple I Tunes was installed. & Norton. I have the same thing
happening... only it was after ITunes was installed. (Norton is
always second to go in.)
Other than telling the kids they can't load their Ipods on this PC
anymore what else can be done?
The first time this happened I ran a recovery... Yep, I have one of
the ready made PCs.
Surely there has to be a sollution for this problem.
I have read your posting twice now. I cannot say I am positive even what
your problem is.
Are you getting some message about the system registry? If so - can you
quote it verbatim?
Actually - how about you describe your problem like you haven't read someone
elses - how it started, etc. After all - there is the distinct (and likely)
possibility we have not read whatever it is you are referring to (especially
since you quoted nothing from it and linked nothing to it.)
* What operating system (be specific) do you have?
Start button --> RUN (no "RUN"? Press the "Windows Key" + R
on your keyboard) --> type in:
winver
--> Click OK.
The picture at the top of the window that opens will give you the general
(Operating System name) while the line starting with the word "version" will
give you the rest of the story. Post both in response to this message
verbatim. ;-)
* What version of iTunes are you installing?
* What specific Norton product are you referring to and what version of said
Norton Product?
Sounds to me - if this is Windows XP 32-bit of some flavor and patched up to
at least SP3 - but hopefully beyond - you need to do some major cleanup.
Along those lines and limitation - I do have some suggestions.
Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this):
SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/
MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/
After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing
whatever they both find completely, you may uninstall these products,
if you wish.
Download and run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx
Reboot.
Download/Install the latest Windows Installer (for your OS):
( Windows XP 32-bit : WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe )
http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/...6F-60B6-4412-95B9-54D056D6F9F4&displaylang=en
and...
Download the latest version of the Windows Update agent from here (x86):
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237
.... and save it to the root of your C:\ drive. After saving it to the root
of the C:\ drive, do the following:
Close all Internet Explorer windows and other applications.
Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemDrive%\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe /WUFORCE
--> Click OK.
(If asked, select "Run.) --> Click on NEXT --> Select "I agree" and click on
NEXT --> When it finishes installing, click on "Finish"...
Reboot.
Then follow the instructions here:

Continue the cleanup (in order):
How to use Disk Cleanup
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310312
(Also remove all but the latest restore point.)
Download/Use CCleaner
http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds
(Slim build, for now, don't use the registry tab - just disk.)
How to scan your disks for errors
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265
(Will involve a reboot and a good amount of time.)
How to Defragment your hard drives
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314848
(Will involve a good amount of time and 15% free space.)
Reboot after defragmenting and...
Log on as an user with administrative rights and open Internet Explorer and
visit
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and select to do a CUSTOM scan...
(Every time you are about to click on something while at these web pages -
first press and hold down the CTRL key while you click on it. You can
release the CTRL key after clicking each time.)
Once the scan is done, select just _ONE_ of the high priority updates
(deselect any others) and install it.
Reboot again.
If it did work - try the web page again - selecting no more than 3-5 at a
time. Reboot as needed.
The Optional Software updates are generally safe - although I recommend
against the "Windows Search" one and any of the "Office Live" or
"Windows Live"ones for now. I would completely avoid the
Optional Hardware updates. Also - I do not see any urgent need to install
Internet Explorer 8 at this time.
You might consider dumping Norton completely - especially if it is more
than just the AntiVirus product. Usually the all-in-one products from
vendors like Symantec/McAfee/TrendMicro aren't worth the trouble they
can cause a regular user. I'd suggest the built-in Windows firewall and
Avira AntiVirus.
There may be more cleanup needed to fix the iTunes issue -
perhaps using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility
(
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 ) to get rid of it from
the registry after properly uninstalling it and then downloading/installing
just the latest version.
In any case - come back - provide more detail about your issue. Don't
assume we know anything about your issues or your computer (we don't.)
If you perform the cleanup and it helps - come back and let everyone know.
If you have trouble - come back and let everyone know - someone can likely
walk you throuygh it.
