Ok, tell me how my PC manufacturer could be hiding system files like the
windows registry. I turned on the option to find "hidden files and folders"
and in search, I turned on the option to search hidden files and folders.

But my system refuses to locate the windows.reg, or the system.reg files.
Isn't that the file name it uses for the windows registry? I did a search
for *.reg and nothing comes up remotely like these expected files.

Obviously they are out there, because my system functions properly.

Just curious about what is going on behind the scenes that I cannot see.

Hi

Most of the Registry related files are in the %systemroot%\system32\config folder.

Hi Bruce,

There is no such thing as windows.reg or system.reg.

To gain access to the Windows registry, go to Start/Run and type in:
regedit

What are you trying to do/accomplish?

Kelly I know all about regedit. I just want to see that the registry files
are out there. They are in a file with a .reg extension aren't they? They
were in previous versions of windows.

Bruce

Hi

No, they are not in .REG files - see my previous posting in this thread.

Bruce Roberson écrivait ceci :

No they weren't. It was System.dat and User.dat in the 9x Windows versions.

In the NT/2000/XP it's called "hives".
One for the user, located here : "%UserProfile%\ntuser.dat"
All the others here : "%SystemRoot%\System32\Config\..." (no *.xxx
extension)

A registry file (*.reg) is a saved key/data that can be merged in the
registry "hives" (kind of database). It is not the registry itself.
