Due to some problems on my PC I want to restore a
previous version of my installation of XP Home edition
I can start System Restore option, but it does not matter
from which checkpoint I start restoring, but after a
while it mention that the restore operation is not
succeeded.

What could be the problem. Is there another way to do this

Adriaan;
If the Restore Points do not work there is probably corruption in the
system Restore files:
Turn off/on System Restore to delete corrupted files:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.
Click System Restore Settings on left side.
Check "Turn off System Restore", click OK, follow prompts and reboot.
This deletes ALL Restore Points including corruption.
Then go back and turn on system Restore and create a Restore Point.
Otherwise:

if I do so, then i will lost a previous backup.

I need to go back to a previous one because the current
situation is not stable and the situation of a couple of
days ago was stable

So what are now the possibilities

Additionally, System Restore only restores system settings, this is not a
full system backup and is not meant to replace backup on your system.
