Oh dear, think I've done something stupid! I was trying
to install the latest driver update for my DVD drive and
I think I may have installed the wrong one. Ever since I
keep getting the 'system recovered from a serious error'
message. I've used 'system restore' to go back in time
but hasn't helped. Please can anyone tell me how to
uninstall the driver update or correct the problem in any
other way.

Many thanks

Try the following:

Start -> Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices. A window will open.

Go to the Hardware tab. Highlight your DVD drive in the Device box, and
hit the "Properties" button at the bottom of the window. Another window
will open.

Go to the Driver tab. From that display, you have the option to update
OR roll back your driver. I'd roll it back until I figured out what was
going on.

I'm running XP Pro - if you're using Home, the route may be a little
different, but you should still have the capability. Heck, I seem to
recall I could roll back drivers in Win98!

Hope this helps!

I'm not sure what Roseanne is talking about but the device manager will allow you to roll back your driver to the previous version to see if that's what caused your problem. go>start\control panel and double click "system" to open it and then the hardware tab\device manager button and then click the + symbol to the left of your DVD /CD-ROM Drives to find yours and then double click on your drive that is in the list to open the configurations window. Now click the driver tab and then the Roll Back Driver button down the lower left and follow the on screen prompts. I hope this helps. Good luck. {:~)

Just another way of getting to the same place. I knew it was in the
Control Panel, but not exactly where, so I went hunting for it. I found
it first in "Sounds & Audio Devices". You, on the other hand, obviously
knew you could get to it through "System". I just checked, and that
takes me to the exact same place. I like your route better, since it's
more likely to be available to the OP.

Thank you so much, that was a great help!
