I was connected to the broadband internet yesterday and
since then the system will shut down as usual, but will
reboot in 10-40 seconds. I tried putting the cable modem
in standby and it stayed off for over an hour but
eventually rebooted. What may have happened and how can I
fix this?

Hi,

Check your system for a "wake on lan" setting in the system bios and disable
it.

I tried that and it didn't work either. I also went to
control panel/systems/pwer mgmt and turned off the auto
reboot. I also turned off the PME event in bios and that
appeared to work for a while. But I have no Idea what
that controls so I turned it back on as well as the "wake
on lan" I am lost on this one.

Hi,

When you power down, you are fully powering down and not using hibernate,
correct?

If so, then there are no settings within Windows that would wake the machine
up this way. It has to be part of the bios. Disable any "wake on..."
settings you find.

.
this is a symptom of the blaster worm or other type of
virus.
as soon as your computer boots up, go to start, run and
enter the following "shutdown -a" without the quote marks
to stop the recycling, then go to your virus company and
get the fix. You'll also have to install the fix from MS,
which is a separate patch.
