I have a computer at work running XP Pro and I have a computer at home
running XP Pro (which I just installed as an upgrade to Windows ME). In
System Properties, Advanced, Performance, Settings, Visual Effects, I have
left Windows to decide what is best for my computer. Both my work and home
computers are set this way; yet, they act differently. Can someone help me
get them to work the same?
Thanks, Jeannine

Hi, Jeannine.
they act differently.

Differently HOW?

Are the two computers physically alike? Or do they have different graphics
system, or different CPUs, or different hard drive configurations? Windows
would "decide" differently for computers with different hardware.

For one thing, I would like my work computer to show category view in
Control Panel, like it does at home.

For another thing, when I go "All Programs" in the Start Menu, I would like
to see all of them in one window and not have to scroll down.

Thanks, Jeannine

For the Start Menu, right click the Start button and select Properties, Customize. Locate and uncheck the option Scroll programs.

For Control Panel, if the option to switch isn't in the left pane, click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\WebView\BarricadedFolders

In the right pane, locate the value shell:ControlPanelFolder. Double click this value and set it to 1.

For the Control Panel issue (I want to show the category view), I went into
the registry and changed the value to 1. Nothing changed. There is no OK
to Apply so I just excited the whole thing. To register my change, do I
have to exit in a special way?
Thanks, Jeannine

No, once you change the value its applied. You said this was on a work computer? Its possible that your system administrator is forcing the Classic Control Panel view, via Group Policies.

yes, this is the computer at work. I, however, have administrator rights.
how can I fix this?
Another funny thing, when I go into My Computer and try to go to Control
Panel from there, it comes up in category view but then it shuts my whole
system down. I lose all my open programs.

Group policies can be enforced against anyone, even Administrators. I don't have an answer to the crashing when opening Control Panel from My Computer.

No, you should probably go back and change the Registry setting back to 0. As for whether or not you can get the Category View, vs. the Classic view, you need to talk to whoever defines the group policies on your work domain.

I'm afraid the person who defines the group polices would be myself and I
don't have a clue what a "policy" is.
