HI,
I had this problem with another XP Pro machine a while back
and never did get it figured out.
I came to my PC today and heard the hard drive chugging
away and checked my task monitor and found the system
process was using about 50% of the processor time. I tried
rebooting the machine but as soon as it starts up, it's
still using this much. It's been about 30 minutes now and
it's still doing this. I have a Pentium 4 with Hyper
threading enabled and both performance meters show the same
processor activity.
I'm running Windows XP Pro SP 1.
I checked the MS suport site but didn't find anything. I've
also disconnected my internet connection to be on the safe
side but this had no effect.
Thanks
Ryan

How much of the processor's time do you feel is about right for the system
process?

Normally, the system idle process fluctuates around 97-98%. This is the same
as the other four XP machines I have while the system is idle (meaning I'm
not doing anything to it).The system process is around 50%, the system idle
is around 50% and the hard drive is going nuts. There definitely something
going on. My CPU meter is running at about half and it is normally pretty
much empty.
I just ran a virus scan as well and it came up clean as well as ran AdAware
6 with the most recent sig file.

Try running spybot too

I did some further testing and found that the problem was my
recently-installed epson stylus printer monitor.
I shutdown the epson monitor process and my CPU went back to normal (the
system process went back to regular (0%) usage). I then uninstalled the
epson printer monitor, rebooted and everything is fine. It's funny how this
took two-three days to present itself.

Thanks

I had a similar problem. Download and run an app called
Spybot then be amazed at the spyware infecting your hard
drive and Ram.
