Repost here identifying what source identies a popping sound
as a system notification. This seems non-standard. Most PCs
signal system errors with a beep code at Power On Self Test
but not otherwise. Windows OSs include no sound signals.

Don, System Notification is indeed an XP system sound. I don't know whatyou
mean because there are a whole host of system sounds that can play unless
they're turned off or the .wav file is changed to something different. Look
in Control Panel under the Sounds tab of Sounds and Audio Services; you can
play each one from there in fact.
System Notification on my PC is sort of the sound of a bubble popping by
default. Like the OP I've never been able to find a way to tell WHAT it's
notifying me of specifically but it actually happens quite often on my
system here. As a result, I've turned off the sound for it, but that still
doesn't stop the sys tray from showing the event happening.

I'm hoping someone can answer the OP on this one; it's been a pet peeve for
some time now.

HTH,

Twayne`
