System memory consumption

I have a Dell Dimension 8300, XP Home, P-4 2.8g with 256 DDR RAM, with a 40Gig HD. I have noticed this same problem with my laptop which has XP. I contently check in windows explorer the properties of my main "C" drive for memory used and free space. When I check it, I am loosing 20-50 Mbs of free space. The overall hard drive used space keeps increasing each day. I have deleted my virus program and I have Zone Alarm as a firewall, so I don't see any prorgams auto-downloading. If so, Zone Alarm will ask before I let them access the internet. No other programs on my HD update, unless I do it manually. I am still loosing memory space. I checked for viruses and none are detected. I started out with about 10Gigs full, since it has grown to 15.4Gig and I checked again last night, and it is now at 15.550Gig. Why/What is happening? Is Xp taking the space for some unknown reason? If so, how can I stop it?

Thanks,
Tom

Is Enable Show Hidden Files and Folders checked? To enable show hidden files select Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings and place a check before Show Hidden Files and Folders.

Using Windows Explorer to search for files more than 1 mb and review results.

What anti-virus programme / utilities?

I had also seen a lot of "C_xxx" files and "NLS.xxx" files. I deleted them on my laptop and my laptop stopped working, I had to reload XP. I will still investigate.

Have you tried checking for spyware etc?

Even AdAware and Spybot can't keep up with all the variants, Harry. HijackThis is the best tool to use these days. See Mike Burgess' page:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Some of these hijackers even block access to AdAware and other pages. If you cannot access the page to download HijackThis, use this link: http://216.180.252.218/~spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/hijackthis.zip

If you find you need CoolWebSearch Shredder, use this link: http://216.180.252.218/~spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/cwshredder.zip
(Get a fresh copy of CWS Shredder before each use. It's updated frequently.)

SpywareBlaster is a definite Thumbs Up. Like AdAware and Spybot, check for updates frequently and run it again if an update is installed.
